I would not recommend doing your banking at FirstMerit. They participate in unfair business practices such as processing debits before credits, daily charging of overdraft fees (so if you are not aware of an overdraft and do not find out about it for a week, you have racked up 7 overdraft fees), processing debits from largest to smallest instead of timestamp order and holding larger checks (and larger means as little is $300) for 3-7 days without allowing you access to the money to cover checks or other transactions, despite the fact that in today's electronic banking world transactions are complete in less than 24 hours which means they have the money - they are just holding it. They also do not give you visibility into what they have pending in their system. Charges made will routinely take 2-3 days to appear, which again is silly in today's electronic banking world. I closed my accounts with them quite some time ago but had a friend dinged by them yesterday ($400 in overdraft fees on $200 in charges) and I thought that perhaps a warning for anyone who is considering banking with them is in order. Bank somewhere else. Unless we consumers stop banking with places that participate in predatory banking, they will not stop with predatory banking.
