Steve Mele is a used car salesman of mortgage loans. This was my 3rd loan so I had a good amount of knowledge going in. Steve was extremely disorganized throughout the process misplacing documents containing personal information including my social security number, bank statements, pay stubs, etc. and asking me to sign the same document a few times. I would still have saved pdfs of the same thing signed a week earlier. He also had me prepay with a personal check to him (mailed to his house) for the property appraisal. When I received the final closing documents less than 24 hours from close(another story), I saw this as a line item and only when I confronted him did he say "it's great news, I was going to give that back to you!" Basically he tried to scam $500 from me. I also wasn't sure if I was going to sell my condo or not when I got the initial approval, and if I did was hoping to get a 15 year fixed loan instead of the 30. He refused to draft up a 15 year loan and said if you sell it, we can refinance you immediately at 15 years, "they've got great rates." Umm yeah, F- you, then I get to pay for two loan closings in a month that you get commission on both for? He's basically the used car salesman of mortgages. Your loan comes with a free trunk full of lies. Also, I told him to please get me the closing documents in a timely fashion as I would be on vacation and had limited access the week prior to closing. Even the morning of the closing he couldn't get me an exact or even relatively close figure, so I just had a padded certified check cut. I got the closing documents about 22 hours prior to closing when he knew I would be traveling. The new law that he said was a source of his confusion throughout the process actually was about him required to get me the closing documents and final figure 3 days prior to closing. I honestly could go on, but I think you get the point. Don't let the plastic smile and "I volunteer at church" schtick fool you.
