Review San Diego Metropolitan Credit Union

Very friendly and convenient. The ladies got my account set up in a breeze.

Absolutely awful customer service. Fortunately, I am with another credit union and only used their service since they are a shared branch. I went in for a simple deposit where I had recently changed the address for my driver's license, so I was on an interim license. On my first trip, I showed my original license which they declared invalid due to the hole punch, fair enough, so I return with my new interim license and this other clerk then asks for my original. I mention to her that Deanna (the previous clerk) has seen my original license already from my previous trip and that I had no idea they needed both. Makes no sense, one valid id should be enough. Deanna (the clerk) never mentioned that I needed the original with the new one, because she didn't think I would return. I guess they don't want customers and must love one-star reviews. If I could, I would give them a minus one-star. She then mentions that I should be carrying both licenses at all times. Um, what if my license was lost or if I was a newly licensed driver and only had my interim paper license? They wouldn't accept it. Just pure incompetence. Top that with their inflexible office hours and lack of branches, I can't see how any San Diego resident would even do service with these clowns.

They REALLY do not want your business! I would give them NO STARS, BUT IT WAS NOT AN OPTION!!! I have not had a California bank in years. With the advent of interstate banking, I have been able to conduct all of my banking business from San Diego throughout US and Canada, where I have accounts in both countries. This Credit Union is a blast from the past! I am sure their Board of Directors are not aware that smart phones and 4G digital transmission is now the mobile phone standard. It really creeped me out about all the information they needed to even assess my worthiness in opening an account with them. When I asked why all this information was necessary, the Senior Member Services Representative Grady M. repeatedly stated, " … we don't know you". All I wanted to do is consider opening an account with them. I figured they were a smaller Credit Union and the service would be more personalized. I was wrong! Grady never rose out of his seat. He seemed non-plused when I told him I was walking by and I figured I would check them out. During the review process they said that there were "flags" raised about the spelling of my name and the address where I resided. They could not get my credit report based off my name. They determined based off of their computer system, I was denied becoming a member until I provided a massive amount of personal information, even though I have an account with a Credit Union back East. I left the branch feeling like I was not worthy to join their CU. I don't know if race had anything to do with it, but it sure felt like it did!!! I guess I cannot be German unless I look like a typical German!! I left feeling as though there was something he saw on his computer screen, which he refused to let me see, had flagged my name. CREEPY!! I reviewed with him the products and the cost of various fees. He never provided me with a fee schedule (I guess I would have been entitled to this AFTER I was offered membership.) They do not have a banking app - he said to "create one would cost too much money". I found this curious since I have seen a number of Apple iPhone CU apps, and they are strikingly similar! Based on what he was saying, his credit union was not interested in buying an app from the credit union association and customize it for themselves. There was some weird discussion about the bank holding statements on "their hard drives for two years, but after complaints, the Board made it three." He seemed to take serious umbrage with this! I guess it was a contentious issue! Then he explained how I would need to contact the Metropolitan when I "left San Diego County" or "made purchases at electronic stores"!?! SUPER , SUPER CREEPY!!! He said reason being if there was fraud on the card, Metropolitan would have to pay for it. He said that was basically something the Credit Union was NOT prepared to do. As an aside I asked, what if I saw a great deal at Best Buy over the weekend, to which he said " you would need to call the CU on Friday to remove a flag on the card!! That was crazy talk to me!! They only have three branches, and the branch that is open for a few hours on Saturday is in El Cajon, "… only 12 miles away", according to Grady. This was of no use to me since I reside downtown. I had never dealt with a financial institution that was more concerned about their money than my own! I guess it is because " … we don't know you!!!" This Credit Union is not worth your time or your hard earned wages. From what I gathered from the limited conversation I had with Grady, their fees for research and minimum deposit fees were the same or more than local competing CUs. Forget about even considering this place. I would rate this with no stars if I could!! P.S. I went to one of their larger competitors. Seemed all the paperwork Metropolitan asked for was unnecessary for this Credit Union. I was personally greeted. They were able to pull up all my financial information. They set me up with a killer account. They were GENUINELY PLEASED I CHOSE THEM FOR MY BANKING NEEDS!!
